Pleasant Hill borders Walnut Creek, Lafayette, Pacheco, Concord and Martinez. Pleasant Hill was a robust farming community in the 1890s, the Central Pacific Railroad's arrival in 1891 helped transform the area, providing access to Pleasant Hill year round. Pleasant Hill became primarily a bedroom community in the 1940s and was incorporated as a city in 1961 with a total area of 7.1 sq. miles; it has grown to nearly 33,000 residents. Centrally located in Contra Costa County, in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area, it runs along I-680 with good access to public transportation. Pleasant Hill is a wonderful mix of busy city streets with a nearby network of beautiful trails for horseback riding, hiking, jogging, bicycling for enjoying the wonderful surroundings and views of Mt. After 25 years of planning, a new downtown area was completed. In the warm spring and summer months, the City Hall parking area is transformed into a local farmer's market and the lawn area becomes an outdoor concert stage for everyone to enjoy the City's free concert series.
Pleasant hill is home to Contra Costa County's central library and Diablo Valley College ,one of the leading state community colleges, as well as John F. Kennedy University andPaul Mitchell the School.
