SPANISH SPRINGS
Spanish Springs, a part of northeastern Reno-Sparks metro area, covers
approximately 60 square miles and has a population of approximately 11,000.

In 1929, Marian and James Kiley settled in the Spanish Springs Valley, purchasing
approximately 2,000 acres to form a cattle ranch, known as the Nevada Hereford
Ranch. Later, the ranch was renamed Kiley Ranch by one of the sons. Today,
a portion of the ranch is known as the Lazy Five Regional Park.
In the 1940s, Sky Ranch Airport, a dirt airstrip, was located northeast of the intersection
of Pyramid Highway 445 and Spanish Springs Road. This was the site of the
first Reno Air Races (see link at http://www.airrace.org/indexJS.php ), in 1964
and 1965, then was the location of the headquarters of the 126,000-acre
Rocketdyne Nevada Field Laboratory (see link at: http://www.pw.utc.com/
Products/Pratt+%26+Whitney+Rocketdyne). NFL was used in the late 1960s
and early 1970s for testing rocket engines used in the Space Program.
Today, there are housing tracts that cover this area.
